How High Should I Hang My Curtains?

Apr 23,2022 Tom H.

If you’re ever wondering how to install curtain rods, look no further than this blog post! Curtains are what really tie in a room together, create an atmosphere, and bring those needed finishing touches to a space. While known for bringing in privacy, they bring this essence to a space that just needs them. But what about knowing how to hang a curtain rod in the space? Believe it or not, but when you’re adding the warmth and texture of curtains, there’s so much you have to consider.

Not only figuring out how to hang curtain rods, but also how high, what is the right fabric, what are the right colors, and what will be best suited for the space overall. It can get overwhelming. While owning curtains can come with some questions, this post will guide you through hanging curtain rods, so your space will look welcoming. Here’s what you need to know!

HOW HIGH TO HANG CURTAINS

It’s completely understandable to feel a bit lost with it all when it comes to hanging your curtains or installing your curtain rods. But there are some things you’ll want to keep in mind.

A Rule of Thumb

So, there is a general rule of thumb for hanging curtain rods. The interior design rule would be to mount the curtain rod around half-foot above the top of the window or door frame. But, you should go even higher if the total space between the top of the framing is less than 12 inches away from the ceiling. The closer the framing is to the ceiling, the closer you need to install your curtain rods to the ceiling.

Arched, bayed, or bowed windows

What if you’re wondering about how to hang curtains on an arched window? One solution for this is an arched curtain rod. The curtains are hung inside-mounted rods, and these usually look the best. Overall, if you have arched, bayed, or bowed windows, an arched window curtain rod will be your best option.

FOR AVERAGE CEILING

If your space, whether it be a bedroom, living room, home office, or anywhere else and you have an average ceiling, your curtain height will be easier to manage. The average ceiling is around 8 feet high, so when considering how high curtains from the floor to choose from, you may want to consider Custom Soundproof Thermal Curtains. These look fantastic, especially if you have average size ceilings. Place these at least 4 to 6 inches above the top of the window, and you’re going to have a space that you can’t help but fall in love with.

HIGH CEILING CURTAINS

Knowing how to hang curtains from the ceiling first starts with establishing whether or not you have high ceilings in your space. Usually, rooms with high ceilings are 10 feet or more. Sometimes there can be more than a foot between the window, and other times, there will hardly be any space at all, depending on the space. When it comes to high ceiling curtains, you’re going to want to think about a few things, such as the ceiling curtain rods and even the length, such as floor to ceiling curtains. Your space will look uncompleted and unbalanced if you have curtains that only hang halfway down, even if your windows are small.

When it comes to ceiling curtains, you’re going to want to keep them within 8 inches from the top of the windows. The ceiling curtain will look a lot better having it be hung like that. But extra bonus points for veiling to floor curtains for your space as well. These look completely elegant, and you can intensify this through our Luxury Velvet Curtains. You’ll completely transform your space into the luxury room of your dreams.

HANGING CURTAINS FOR ARCHED OR TRANSOM WINDOWS

Both arched and transom windows, especially surrounding a door frame, are so tasteful. But one common question that comes up is how to hang curtains on arched windows. You’ll need either a standard curtain rod for the transom windows or maybe an arched curtain rod if you have arched windows. Overall, when it comes to your covering plans for the space, you do have options from a specialized arched window curtain rod or something better suited for transom windows.

THE LENGTH OF CURTAINS YOU NEED

When it comes to standard interior design rules, curtain length rules matter; they deeply matter. What curtain length you have needs to be considered, especially when selecting these (versus how high your curtains are). Generally speaking, you’re going to want the bottom of your curtains to fall to the floor. The puddle effect tends to look best, and it helps combine the ceiling and floor, leaving the space as one.

Do your curtains always need to puddle? While puddled curtains such as the Grommet Luxury Velvet Curtains look spectacular, your curtains don’t always need to puddle. Even having a little bit of space between the floor and the bottom of your curtain will look fantastic.

HOW TO MOUNT THE CURTAIN ROD

Curtain hanging method

There are so many things that will impact the appearance of your windows when figuring out how to hang curtain rods. First, you’re going to want to make the room appear taller, so you’re going to want to use the general rule of thumb by hanging curtain rods above the framing. The curtain rod placement matters as you’re not going to want to make it too wide or won’t complement the window frame. Plus, the Curtain Rod itself matters. Ideally, it should pair up well with the framing of your door or window while at the same time nicely complementing other elements in the space too.

How High to Mount the Curtain Rod

You should try to mount your curtain rods, so it extends anywhere from 3 to 6 inches, maybe even more. It should pass either side of the window or door frame. When mounting your curtain rod, you’re going to want to ensure that it does indeed give the space that much-needed depth.

Width of the Curtain Rod

While the height itself of curtains and curtain rods matters a lot, the width should absolutely not be skipped over either. You’ll want to limit the width of your curtain roads to no more than one-third wider than the width of the windows. Any more than that, and it’s going to look off and clutter the wall. Overall, adding more height to a frame looks great as it creates the illusion of large ceilings, but width-wise it’s not a good decision.

Remember to hang your curtain rod higher and choose longer Nicetown curtains that can fall to the floor. Our Nicetown blackout curtains are fully customizable in sizes at ease. If you can, fix your curtain rod nearer to the ceiling than the top of your window; sitting three to six inches above the window frame would work well. With higher rods and longer curtains, you can create a little puddling that can be nice if you want a romantic feel, but if you don’t want them dragging and getting dirty, stop the fabric just before they hit the floor — a little under an inch is good.

END.
